Welcome! I am so happy to have you! I usually get a lot of emails/questions when people first visit my website for yarn, so I thought I would dedicate this little section on my FAQ page to chat about how my shop typically works!
You may have noticed that I don't have any yarn in stock - this is because, at this point, Explorer Knits + Fibers primarily operates via Shop Updates every month or so at a scheduled date and time. These Shop Updates are either "in-stock/ready to ship" updates, OR a pre-order, where you can order as much yarn as you need without the stress/rush of ready-to-ship updates. The only difference is that this yarn is dyed-to-order, so the turnaround time is around 6-8 weeks (I promise it's worth it)!
Aside from Shop Updates, I also have Yarn Clubs going on year-round! Currently (May 2020), I have a National Park Yarn Club running from April-September, where I am dyeing a colorway to represent a different National Park each month! I will open up a listing at the beginning of each month where you will have a chance to sign up for that month's National Park colorway!
Lastly, I have a lot of stockists that I am filling wholesale orders for, and I highly encourage you to check out my Stockists page to find out which local yarn shop you can support to snag some of my yarn!

Where Our Yarn Comes From
Our merino yarn is ethically sourced from South America, specifically Argentina, Uruguay and Peru. Additionally, all of our yarn comes from farms that follow mulesing-free practices.
Our Hand-Dyeing Process
Each 'dye day' beings with creating a dye schedule to ensure that we are being efficient and productive when dyeing. All yarn is first soaked in a lukewarm water bath with citric acid to assure that your yarn absorbs all dye fully. After soaking, the yarn is either speckled or placed in a dye pot based on which colorway we are creating. Once the water in the dye pot has returned to room temperature and the color has been set, the yarn is then rinsed and soaked in a wool wash to leave the yarn smelling nice and fresh. Finally, we hang dry our yarn and once it is fully dry we skein and label the yarn so it's ready to find a new fiber-loving home!
We have a variety of different bases available in our shop. The name before the weight of the yarn is based on the fiber content (e.g. 'Teton' is a 75% superwash merino 25% nylon blend, whereas 'Denali' is a 80% superwash merino 20% nylon blend). Our bases are as follows:
Teton Sock: our 75% Superwash Merino 25% Nylon sock base with a 4-ply twist, 463 yards/100g
Denali Sock: our 80% Superwash Merino 20% Nylon sock base with a 2-ply twist, 400 yards/100g
Rockies Sock: our 100% Superwash Merino sock base with a 2-ply twist, 400 yards/100g
Rockies DK: our 100% Superwash Merino DK base with an 8-ply twist, 274 yards/100g
Rockies Worsted: 100% Superwash Merino worsted base with an 8-ply twist, 218 yards/100g Rockies Bulky
Rockies Bulky: 100% Superwash Merino bulky base with a 3-ply twist, 206 yards/100g
Washing Your Yarn
While most of our bases include superwash merino, we recommend handwashing all knit garments in lukewarm water and then laying flat to dry on blocking mats or a clean towel. If you do decide to wash your garment, please keep in mind that although the yarn is superwash, it should always be laid flat to dry. A small amount of bleeding in your first few washes may occur, but if this continues to persist please contact us so we can address this issue.
When will my package arrive?
Our shipping time depends on one thing: whether you shopped in-stock or pre-order yarn. Typically, in-stock yarn will ship within 3-6 days of when your order was placed, unless otherwise specified in the listing. Pre-orders, depending on the size of the kit, typically ship within 2-3 weeks of when the order was placed.
US orders are always shipped via USPS (first class or priority mail based on buyer preference and package weight). First class packages typically arrive within 5-7 days of shipment, whereas priority mail packages arrive within 2-3 days of shipment. International orders are shipped via First Class International mail and typically arrive within 3-5 weeks of shipment.
Note about US Orders: once orders have been shipped, they become the responsibility of you, the customer. While we are not responsible for lost packages, I will do my best to help answer questions about your shipment. However, if a package is indeed lost, USPS should be contacted directly to resolve the issue.
Note about International Orders: once orders have been shipped, they become the responsibility of you, the customer. While we are not responsible for lost/damaged packages, I will do my best to help answer questions about your shipment. The customer is responsible for any additional fees (e.g. customs) that may be accrued during transport.
If a package has been refused by you or deemed 'undeliverable', you will receive a refund only for the price of the items you purchased, i.e. shipping charges will not be refunded.
Please let me know right away if for some reason you are unhappy with your purchase, if it has been damaged in any way, or if you received the wrong item(s). We will do our best to resolve the issue. If you want to return your item, it must be returned within 10 days of receiving the package and returned in its original state to be eligible for a refund. If the yarn has been caked or unwound, a refund will not be given. The buyer is responsible for shipping costs, as shipping charges are non-refundable.
Note about Digital Patterns: because digital patterns are emailed to the customer almost immediately upon purchase, refunds for these items cannot be given. If you have any issues or questions about the patterns, please let me know and I will be happy to help!
At this time we do not offer exchanges. Please refer to the returns section for more information about your purchase.
Due to the small scale of our shop at this time (it's just me dyeing over here!), we do not take orders for custom colorways. However, if you would like a certain number of skeins (e.g. sweater quantity) of an existing colorway, please let me know and I would be happy to set up a custom listing for you.

Wholesale orders are available for local yarn shops as well as Knit-A-Longs (KALs) that you are interested in hosting.
